Local News and Announcements... Don't miss anything...please scroll downCheck out the latest FOR News0 Comments (perma-link) Email this: Please add yours to the voices around the world calling for: the restoration of democracy to Haiti; condeming the undermining of the nation's democratically-elected government by the Bush-Cheney administration and U.S. militaristic-corporate economic interests; and a massive investment humanitarian assistance by the U.S., France and other nations (many of which have exploited Haiti's natural resources, including the nation's impoverished peoples for a couple of centuries). For your information, after the calls to action listed below, we have included more background information, including: 1) an exhilarating update from Democracy Now! about a peoples' delegation for democracy, currently in the Central African Republic, planning to fly President Jean Bertrand Aristide and his wife Mildred back to the Carribean hopefully by tomorrow. We applaud the courage and conviction of the delegation. They represents what is best about the human spirit, which transcends all boundaries of nationality, ethnicity, etc. The delegation's intent and action stands starkly, embarassing the actions taken (and not taken) by Bush-Cheney officials. In mid-Missouri, tune in to "Democracy Now," Monday and weekday mornings 8:00-9:00 a.m., KOPN-FM, 89.5 and elsewhere. 2) a public statement issued on Thursday by the national Fellowship of Reconciliation; 3) a report sent out Monday by the ANSWER coalition regarding the delegation sent to the African nation to interview President Aristide. (A personal note: For the unaware, ANSWER is a group inspired/guided by members of the Socialist Workers Party, and while I don't personally support their political bend, they have undertaken many worthy and commendable actions in support of self-determination and in opposition to U.S. empire-building in Iraq, Haiti and elsewhere.) In solidarity with our sisters and brothers struggling for dignity, justice and democracy in Haiti and beyond, Jeff Stack, coordinator Mid-Missouri Fellowship of Reconciliation jstack@no2death.org 573-449-4585 What you can do: *Contact the office of your Members of Congress (Congressional Switchboard: 202-224-3121). Urge them to support: -- efforts by the Congressional Black Caucus's efforts to find out what role the United States played in the coup that removed President Aristide from Haiti; -- the right of democratically elected presidents to complete their terms. Ask them to press the White House to help restore Aristide to his democratically-elected office through nonviolent means. * Contact the Kerry campaign at John Kerry for President, Inc. 901 15th Street, NW, Suite 700 Washington, DC 20005; 202-712-3000; 202-712-3001 (fax); info@johnkerry.com -- Ask the campaign of John Kerry to clearly state his rejection of the coup in Haiti, and to describe what his administration will do to restore democratic rule. Sen. Kerry has criticized the Bush administration's handling of the crisis, but has not specified what he will do to support democratic government in Haiti. In a call I made to the campaign, a worker said Kerry and the staff had major doubts about the legitimacy of the Haitian elections. That's not the conventional belief held by the world community. Let the will of the Haitian people be supported not undermined. * Write letters to the editor of local newspapers condemning the US-supported coup, and urging the United States, specifically the Bush-Cheney administration and Congress to cease their recognition of the coup-led government and support the restoration of democracy with Aristide's protected return. Let the Haitian people decide through the next election if they want a change in their government policy (Aristide will not be eligible for the next election). Allow him to finish his term; insist that our government no longer be an anti-democrat agent. There have been 33 coups in Haiti-- most of them with at least U.S. blessing if not orchestration, since the nation's founding 200 years ago 0 Comments (perma-link) Email this: ArchivesMay 2003 June 2003 July 2003 August 2003 September 2003 October 2003 November 2003 December 2003 January 2004 February 2004 March 2004 April 2004 May 2004 June 2004 July 2004 September 2004 October 2004 November 2004 December 2004 February 2005 March 2005 April 2005 May 2005 June 2005 July 2005 September 2005 October 2005 November 2005 December 2005 January 2006 February 2006 March 2006 April 2006 May 2006 August 2006 December 2006 January 2007 April 2007 July 2007 December 2007 May 2008 July 2008 December 2009 June 2010 December 2010 January 2011 October 2011 |
