Russ Breyfogle, president of the Columbia chapter of Veterans for Peace, will offer his comments on the concept of Veterans Day, as will Lana Jacobs with the St. Francis House Community and Jeff Stack, coordinator of the Mid-Missouri Fellowship of Reconciliation. All will be available to field questions as well. Today, many of our national leaders continue to recall Nov. 11 as Veterans Day, an occasion to recall those U.S. combatants who died in foreign wars. The Columbia Peace Coalition encourages our society to harken back to the observation’s roots-- a time to remember all human beings around the world, who were killed or injured in war, and to recall that it was the stated hope that the day would mark an end to all wars. Sadly, the United States instead is involved in two active wars and occupations, of Iraq and Afghanistan. The Bush-Cheney administration additionally is rattling the sabers in threatening war as well upon Syria, Iran and speaks openly of waging a Perpetual War and of “Pre-emptive” wars. And while the military budget bloats, the level of financial support for veteran health care continues to pitifully shrink. The Coalition believes that if our nation is sincere in its desire to show respect for those U.S. military personnel who have fought, were injured or died in wars, the best memorial would be to provide the promised healthcare and to earnestly strive for an end to U.S. involvement in war. Rather than using the poor and young people of our nation essentially as cannon fodder for war-making, we urge a rebuilding of this nation into a society meeting the real human needs of its citizens and striving for the U.S. to be an ambassador of justice and benevolence abroad. The Columbia Peace Coalition includes: MU Students for Progressive Action, Mid-Missouri Peaceworks, Mid-Missouri Fellowship of Reconciliation, St. Francis Catholic Worker Community, Interfaith Peace Alliance of Mid-Missouri, Green Party of Central Missouri, Veterans for Peace, Women’s Int’l League for Peace and Freedom, Columbia Friends Meeting, Middle East Justice Advocates, Food Not Bombs, Newman Center Social Concerns, Unitarian Universalist Social Action Committee, Native American Support Group, Hickman High School Peaceworks, Rock Bridge Christian Church, UMC Faculty, Staff and Students Concerned About Democracy and Public Knowledge and Peace Magick.
